January Book of the Month

Each month in 2023, we plan to recommend one book for our church family to read. Occasionally, we'll host discussion groups to dig deeper into the substance of that month's book. Whether you read it alone, or invite a fellow member to read along with you, we hope these books will expand and deepen your mind and soul. Our goal in all of this is "love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith" (1 Tim. 1:5).

January's Book of the Month will be A Little Book for New Theologians: Why and How to Study Theology by Kelly Kapic. This little book (just over a hundred pages) is a great introduction into the importance of theology in the life of every Christian - not just pastors and teachers. The invitation of theology is to know and enjoy the living God. Therefore, the way we do theology is of vital importance. Kapic gives guardrails and signposts that keep aspiring theologians on the right track: the inseparability of life and theology, faithful reason, prayer and study, humility and repentance, tradition and community, loving Scripture. These all promote a healthy and humble way of seeking to know God. He is not a specimen to be placed under a microscope, but the God to whom we can only draw near in humility and reverence (Isa.66:2). It is then that we are enlightened to know and enjoy Him as He truly is.

Let me seek you in longing, and long for you in seeking.

Let me find you in love, and love you in finding.

(Anselm, Proslogion)
