Church-Wide Read (Fall)

"We hold these truths to be self-evident..." In our Western culture, those truths would be things like freedom, kindness, equality, progress, compassion, consent, enlightenment, and science. To a typical person, those values are the truth and, therefore, they're self-evident. Why? How? To the surprise of many, the values we hold as self-evident have not always been self-evident. Global history would tell a different story. Yet, Christianity has influenced the atmosphere so radically that now these values are simply the air we breathe.

In his book The Air We Breathe: How We All Came to Believe in Freedom, Kindness, Progress, and Equality, Glen Scrivener helps us slow down and take note of our breathing. As a result, we come to appreciate what we often take for granted. Additionally, we may find new common ground with our unbelieving friends that can start a conversation, helping us see how our society has lost its way and how the Christian faith is truly good news for our world.

We hope you’ll get yourself a copy and invite some friends along as we seek to consider afresh the beauty and goodness that the gospel produces.

Tolle Lege!
