What does a prophet from 2,500 years ago have to teach us about priorities? A lot. Haggai ministered to God’s people after they had returned from exile. At first, the people were eager to rebuild the temple and recommit their lives to the LORD, but when things got tough they grew weary. Eventually they forgot about God’s priorities and became concerned only with themselves. Through the prophet, the LORD raised His voice to His people “Think carefully about your ways” (Hag.1:5; 1:7; 2:15; 2:18).
Haggai is about rebuilding our priorities around God’s priorities. At a time when the church is returning and rebuilding after being scattered, when many Christians and non-Christians alike are reconsidering what’s really important, when many are tempted to only be concerned with themselves, when many are distracted and discouraged, the message of Haggai is as timely as ever. It tells us that the blessed life is one centered around God’s glory among His people.
