Who was Jesus of Nazareth? Endless books have been written about him. In recent years, several authors have sought to expose who the historical Jesus really was – often claiming that the Jesus of history is not the same as the Christ of faith. Yet many people would have trouble answering this question (who was Jesus?) with much substance. Perhaps they watched the DaVinci Code or read an op-ed piece in a major newspaper. Perhaps they grew up being taught all the right things about Jesus, but only saw it contradicted by His followers.
But the truth is that Jesus is a figure who demands a thoughtful response.
H.G. Wells wrote: I am an historian, I am not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very center of history. Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history.
The most dominant figure in all history shouldn’t be dismissed because of a movie, or because some of his fans turned out to be knuckleheads. His claims should be examined. The biographies of eyewitnesses should be engaged. When they are, every person – believer or non-believer – is challenged. And if we will surrender to Him, we will be changed.
Join us Sundays at 10am as we open up Luke’s Gospel, a carefully investigated account based on eyewitness reports. Get to know the real Jesus with us. As a result you can “know the certainty of the things about which you have been instructed” (Luke 1:4).
